Frogman in St Maarten – simple photo editing in Windows 7

I was rummaging through some of the pictures we took during last week’s cruise and saw this one. It’s interesting (because I’m the subject), but it’s totally washed out. Pam was about 25 feet away from me when she took it.

So to try to fix it I made a copy then opened it in the Windows Live photo gallery on my desktop (which is Windows 7 beta). There are a number of options in the toolbar, including “Fix”:

image which opens the following options down the right side of the window:

I adjusted the exposure and color settings by hand. I tried “auto adjust,” but it didn’t make much of a difference. Here’s the end result:

Not too bad, eh?

Another feature I’ll be able to use on a bunch of the pictures is “Straighten photo” which allows you to adjust the horizon. So many of my sunset and other pictures I took from the ship had the horizon tilted a bit. This will make it simple to correct that.

I like it.
